A Mirror on Israel

Posted by uscsjp on March 28, 2008

“Last summer, the Pappe family packed its belongings, rented out its spacious house in Israel and moved to Britain. Ever since his support of an academic boycott on Israel’s universities became public, historian Ilan Pappe, 54, has felt like public enemy number one. Pappe says he had received death threats by phone almost on a daily basis.

Did it not occur to you that calling for an academic boycott on Israel might incite the public against you?

‘I supported the boycott because I believe that without pressure, Israel will not end the occupation. Even before then I reached the conclusion that the peace process enables Israel to stall for time. When in 2003 several international organizations approached me and asked whether I would support the boycott I replied positively’…”

“There have been rapid price increases over the last few months because of the closure. Three months ago, for instance, a liter of corn oil cost 19 shekels [the equivalent of $4.50]. Now it costs 29 shekels [$7]. The price of flour has also doubled; three months ago a kilo of flour was two shekels. Now our customers have to pay four shekels…”

New York Times and BBC Propaganda

The New York Times and Gaza
By Howard Friel, ZNet

During the first two months of 2008, Israeli security forces killed 146 Palestinians in the Occupied Territories, 42 of which did not participate in fighting. During the same period, Palestinians killed one member of the Israeli security forces and two Israeli civilians. These figures were reported by B’Tselem, the Israeli human rights organization, on February 28, two days before Israel invaded the Gaza Strip. Consistent with its custom, the New York Times ignored this B’Tselem report, nor did it independently report similar statistics. In short, it would be difficult to learn by reading the Times that Israel had killed so many Palestinians in the two-month period prior to its March 1 invasion of Gaza..”

Israeli Deaths Matter More
By David Cromwell, ZNet

“The horrific shooting of eight young people at a Jewish seminary in Jerusalem last Thursday was followed by saturation media coverage. International statesmen lined up with condemnations of the attack and condolences for the victims and their families… The contrast to reactions to the killing of over 120 Palestinians, including many women and children, in occupied Gaza the previous week could hardly be more striking. On one day alone, 60 people died in a hail of Israeli firepower using F-16 planes, Apache helicopter gunships, tanks, armoured bulldozers and ground troops…”

“JERUSALEM, March 12 (Reuters) – Israel said on Wednesday it would no longer cooperate with the influential Arabic television station Al Jazeera, accusing it of one-sided reporting that favours the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Al Jazeera denied any bias in its reporting and said it had received no formal communication from the Israeli government on the decision.

Israeli officials said the government would not grant interviews to the Qatar-based satellite station and could deny visas to its employees due to its coverage of fighting between Israel and militants in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip…”
